Hello everyone! This past weekend was birthday weekend for me. I am now 34 years young.
A male friend recently said to me “Wow, most women your age hate their birthday” or something fairly similar to that. It’s true that most people my age dislike their birthdays, not just women. No matter how many times you hear (or say) “Age is relative” or “30 is the new 20” or any of a myriad of clichés regarding age, getting older still sucks. You start thinking of all the things you’ve always wanted to do, but you just haven’t gotten around to doing yet. You think about the family you’ve always wanted to have, but you made other choices and kept putting it off and now it’s just too late. You think about how you’ve always wanted a college degree, but now you’re just too old to go back. Et cetera, et cetera.
Well… STOP IT!
I too get bogged down by these types of thoughts every once in a while. The thing is, none of us are getting any younger… and it’s NEVER too late to go after your dreams. You may have to go about achieving your dreams in a different way than originally planned, but the time is going to pass anyway, so why SHOULDN’T you go after what you’ve always wanted? Seriously.
SO, my birthdays aren’t about turning another year older. Birthdays to me are about celebrating another year of life and the people who have stuck by me through that year; those who have been there forever, and the ones I’ve just met and the ones who want to continue to be there through the years to come. Birthdays are a chance to realize my milestones and to reflect on and reevaluate those things that may not be as important to me this year as they seemed last year.
Instead of dreading your birthday and the fact that you’re another year older, take some time to celebrate the fact that you made it through another year; relish the friendships that have sustained you , contemplate the failures (both real and perceived), and take pride in your successes. Reflect on the past year, and formulate a plan to make the next year even better.
Age is only a number, and you really are only as old as you feel. Granted, there are some days you definitely feel older than others, but the only person who can hold you back and keep you down is you. Get out of your own way and see what can happen!
